Conrad's novella, Heart of Darkness predates Achebe's Things Fall Apart by some six decades; Conrad has Kurtz write a report for the International Society for the Suppression of Savage Customs, and Achebe ends his novel with the District Commissioner planning to write an anthropological narrative called The Pacification of the Primitive Tribes of the Lower Niger.
