Creative Writing: Reality Control

Instructions:

Create a narrative, descriptive paragraph of a society under reality control using one of the following literary devices: metaphor; simile; personification; imagery; synesthesia.

Once you finish writing your descriptive paragraph, provide an additional 2-3 sentences reflecting on the following:
Explain the way in which you employed the specific literary device;
Identify what analytical concept compelled you to use the device (audience/ purpose; content/ theme; tone/mood; structure; stylistic device);
Now, write a summative sentence using a to-infinitive phrase with a marker verb, such as "employing the metaphor of . . . , I intended to demonstrate [persuade, explore, satirize] . . . .

Example:
First week of school (imagery)
As I walked into my English class for the first time this year, I didn’t know what to expect. As I quickly scanned the room, a few new faces in the class carried expressions of anxiety and nervousness like my own. The others I’d seen for so many years hadn’t changed at all. The odor of freshly painted walls and slippery, waxed floors indicated that the summer crew had done its job. As usual, the teacher had her desks and chairs arranged in perfect rows.

 I provided details of the classroom and the expressions of the students, the smell of the paint, and texture of the floor using visual, olfactory, and tactile imagery.

 I hoped to create a nostalgic tone via my details/imagery.

 I wanted to highlight that nervous, at times awkward, feeling we all tend to feel when introduced to something new.

One example of reality control is the monopoly on news media that is held by the richest one percent in the country. Every major news source from CNN to FOX is owned by a certain group of individuals belonging to the 1% By owning these news stations they sway the American public to vote for candidates and support their ideas, not because they align with their beliefs, but rather because they stand to make a profit from doing so. By consuming any news source that is owned by these people you are feeding into their narrative and begin to believe the world that is painted for you by them. This is the highest form of really control, as you believe you are a true free thinker but still are a subject to the control of your mind through these news sources.

Through the use of a critical tone I was able to paint my point of view with great clarity to the audience. The concise examples and criticism of the current state of media, paired with blunt explanations allow for the digestion of this information to be almost immediate, instead of hiding the meaning of the content in between the words presented. Additionally, I call out the reader personally by using the words “you” repeatedly throughout the text, making it a sort of wake up call emulating Orwellian writing.

The media controls our life on a daily basis, for example we wake up turn on the tv and watch the news. All the ads that pop up control us. Some ads tell us to buy pills too loose weight, so we buy them. Things like this warp our minds we wan’t everything the easy way.
I used imagery to create an illustration of a brain washed American sitting do0wn in front of a Tv because it represents todays society. People are so hung up on television we forget to do normal things like get up and go outside or even go to the restroom, we are controlled by the media.

There are many ways that our reality can and is being controlled. Ranging from Media, Propaganda, and Social networks. During the 1940’s, many of Hitler’s followers would condone to his propaganda about the Jewish race. His”government”, would create posters to inform the population of the monstrosity that they were supposed to be. One poster read, “He’s the cause for the war.” (while pointing to a Jewish man) causing the general population to believe that they indeed did and deserved to die. By allowing themselves to believe that. They were submitting into what they believed to be the right thing because the government said it was correct.

It is now 2075. Most of the country has been reduced to miles of similar looking structures and vehicles, with the occasional sirens of Enforcement Drones. The few of us that remain are hidden in the plain sight of the world. Almost like rats in the sewer. The underground maze of tunnels created more than a century ago is where we reside. Sub-paths, I think they were called? We each learned how to navigate through the dimly lit, damp brick caves and how to leave them without being spotted by the regime. The cramped streets above make it difficult, but with all the people and noise and dark places to hide and come out of it is not impossible. The rows of buildings as far as the eye can see is the first thing one notices when exiting the sub-paths, no matter where you get out from.

Reality Control happens when your mind is being controlled. Propaganda, power, political status, and media can put one under reality control. It is done when a statement is said to be the truth but to make sound more acceptable. There are people who are paid to make propaganda posters or talk about the issues in the world that make their words or statements sound as if they are the truth but only for it to be more tolerable. So when people begin to believe what the news say, what the people in higher power than others say they tend to believe it and they eventually are being mind controlled by the propaganda, media and more sources.
I utilized imagery to show that mind control in how people believe everything they hear on the news or what they see on tv because they depend so much on people bringing them the news.
I hoped to create a evocative tone via my details and imagery. I wanted to highlight the mind control and how we all believe things that are said that we had never heard about.

Reality control is a brainwashing procedure that occurs through our daily lives. Well, at 8-9 hours of our lives. You see, we as teenagers engaged in going to hell and back day by day. We walk in at 8:20 and have to pretend that we are so happy and ready to focus and learn, but at 4:05 we go back to reality of being tired and drained. Yet, if this hell was 24 hours of our day; how would the idea of our lives be?

I decided to use a metaphor in my paragraph. Hell is school because everyday we come here and act like we have to enjoy what’s happening when in reality were getting told what to do and how to do it.

Reality control is when a persons mind is being “brainwashed” in a way. This can be done by using propaganda to convince someone to believe what you want them to believe. It could also be done by scaring your brain into being controlled by someone else, usually in fictional writing the government would be the one to do this to their people. An example of this could be North Korea’s control over the media and news. They strictly watch over what the people know and limit their peoples knowledge on current event and if someone wishes to think differently they are taken to prison where they suffer for a long time.
I used personification to make sure my point got across that fear is one of the major assets when controlling peoples reality. This technique is very commonly used in fiction and in real life.

Reality control is something that no one ever wants in their lives. People want to be free and be able to express themselves in whatever way they can. Reality control is when the government has you under controlled in thinking that you are believing in something that is true. People that are known because of the news they say or because they have a higher power and many people agreeing with them then, that’s when people are believe something just because they see that many people are aggreing with that news and standing up for what the person is trying to catch your attention with.
I decided to use imagery because this can make people understand that this actually does happen in real life and that they can identify with themselves. In addition this is how the people are tend to be in mind control because they don’t know if its the truth or not.

Instead of living in a world where citizens has freedom of speech, protest, etc. now we live in a world where even if you think about revolting against our government and political system, you will suddenly disapear and be erased from all records and memories of your loved ones. We are being watched 24/7 by the government looking to weed out the unwanted and the dangerous. Everyone is to look the same, live the same and trust no one. Everywhere you look, there are political posters of the leader and his propoganda. Whether it’s a small poster on the lamppost outside a restaurant or a billboard towering above the city. The computers that are accessible for the citizens of this nation allow them to view only one website - The National News. Through the loudspeakers on the streets, you can hear the propoganda of the leaders and the national anthem being played repeatedly every day of the week. Every Monday, the leader’s speech of his information for the people is being televised. The amount of power the leader has is too much for the citizens of this nation.

With this mind controlling technology that was revealed along with many other forms of technology, the government has turned on its people. They have taken control of people's thoughts and actions with no liberties left. A small resistance remains but not much hope is left as there government mind controlled slaves keep closing in. I utilized imagery to give the reader the viewpoint of someone who has joined the “resistance” and is telling the current situation. My purpose was to show others of what type of technology the government could possess that we have no idea about.

Propaganda will be spread across the masses and allow for the government cover up their failures. In this dystopian society the government is keeping people free by taking away their liberties.

An example of this can be North Korea, the president there was brainwash people into making them think he was a savior to them or sumthing like that, but no he kinda isn’t. He got a fresh cut though. I know that a kid there escaped that place and talked how he was trapped and other things abut, there went a team to go record what goes on in hope to find out what happens. I am not sure what else went on but they did find things and helped blind people recover with equipment for surgery.

A controlled society I can be beneficial or harmful to the community. Some people would come up with conspiracies, they’ll think their crazy and little do we know that they were right about everything. But we would never know because the government controls everything. For example, The Giver, written by Lois Lowry, is a book about a controlled society and a man who is given the special ability to see what others can’t, and gains the knowledge that the previous “giver” held. Until this young ambitious “giver” tries to tell everybody that what they live in is fake and they are missing out on a whole new perspective of life, all because the government absolutely controls the entirety of the city. I used similie because I wanted to emphasize the amount of thought that has been put into this idea of reality control. With all of the “fake news” that’s been popping up, and every single detail about the government being untrustworthy and dishonest. The world has created their own versions of what they believe reality control truly is.

Blood flowed down the iron walls as screams of the persecuted were silenced one by one. This such event was a regular occurrence, after all, there were always rebels and scoundrels to be caught. Those who will break the rules always suffer the same fate, the execution grinder. Every rebellion, every uprising was futile. These dark and dreary days in our little town were always as if there was curse of eternal night that drains the soul.

I used Imagery to describe the room for the execution grinder to show the horror of the everyday executions. I also used a simile to describe the gloominess of the town.

Most authors provide us with an anti-hero that embodies realization, and the consequences of being rebellious. Reality control is a serious problem that people have finally began to shed light on. Throughout our lives, we have been victims of this crime. Everywhere we look, everything we hear is intoxicated with different forms of persuasion, and brainwashing. These ads hinder absolutely every action that we make. Our decisions are influenced by those that are in power.

I believe that most of the things of this world are unpredictable, but if I had to predict the future has it is progressing I would probably say that the future is going to hold us back. The prospec future that the world has made for it self is not good enough to live. By this I mean that probably fake new are going to devastate countries and those are going on rebellion, not missing out the affection we have to our precious environment. I believe that our technology is progressing vastly, but people always go for the cheap stuff because our economy is not at its best. This would probably lead to us using rusty old tech and leave the high end of tech to the wealthiest. This will leave the environment full of trash made by humanity.

For this paragraph I used personification four the future to make it more like a force than a time in space. I also tried to use imagery to make rusty old tech less important than something the future can actually give.

It’s now the year of 3000 the earth is now isolated with toxins, the people of earth had to flee into a space plantation facility in order to survive. Earth is know to not be survive-able, our plantation facility is holding over a million of civilians and over a million of animals. Our space craft has several rooms that are known to have over 20 rooms filled with food, meat, fruits, and vegetables. Our space craft has taken years to find another planets that is surviveable but still no trace or other life. With no earth we live in space having to deal with no oxygen breathe our feet, i can feel myself suffocating in just the thought. Our civilians have to stay on rooms bunched with 4 beds known as the plantation rooms, due to the fact that each civilian has to be able to grow a plant to help our ship be surviveable.

It is 2160, land is a rare sight for now most of the space is filled with amazingly advanced technology that does most if not all human jobs. The sights include vehicles which movie at amazing speeds, but not fast enough that allow the citizens to view the last political news. Screens are now everywhere sharing the news of the latest laws, light is present ever and the world is at its peak people living their best life. What people don’t realize is that it is all an illusion from the mind, in which all people live their best life based on the desires of their mind and heart

Imagery stays permanent in the readers mind, and the reader gets to add details in which they please the readers version of the story.

It’s the year 2055. Wherever you go we’re blinded by bright lights broadcasting advertisements for the latest technology and products just being released on the market by big corporation businesses. Even when you wake up on a nice Sunday morning there’s no avoiding flashy commercials about “Our specialized team has proven that <said product> helps revolutionize our day for countless hours”

Even today all we see on our televison screen or phones is some new IPhone product with the latest features and all this descriptive information to show that this is the product you should have and how much better it is compared to the last version. Another example could be skin care products with the quote I shared “Our specialized team has proven ... for several hours” This can also tie in with a product named five hour energy. So really you can say that we’re controlled by countless ads that are shown to us almost- if not everyday of the week. Or another way of saying this is that we are encouraged to buy these products despite not actually having a need or purpose for said product.

It is said to be year 106 of this new society. I walk out of my house greeted with smell rain fells my nostrails and soft sound of wind soothes me. I look at my block and, yep, everything exactly the same, each house alike inside and out. Each house a small rectangular shape meant for no more than 2 people to live in. A small stone pathway leading to the electric cars. The pathway lined with grass and beautiful small flowers that you can see the morning dew on.

I used imagery to show how this society is controlled by being all the same and giving the society a new year. I wanted and hoped to show how this society is controlled to the extent that everyone lives in the exact same house.

I don’t have much time to write this, but since they’re gonna send me to a re-education camp soon, I have to say this. Today I woke up to a bright, blue sky. After my enjoying my sweet breakfast made of organic berries and oats, I decided to walk through the cool crisp air of the early December morning, browsing the latest fashions in the windows of the white, pristine shops. The national news suddenly blasted at eardrum-rupturing volumes, so I gazed up at the tallest building in the city, the large tele-screen displaying everyone’s favorite host, samuel #1987. His shiny, hair gel soaked hair gleaming through the screen. l sat at a bench, hearing the cheery laughs of schoolchildren at the park on 47th street, while smelling the heavenly aromas of that one German pastry shop by the mall. It was a perfect day. Suddenly, bead of sweat ran down my cheek. As I raised my hand to wipe at my face, I felt something weird.

And then I took off my government issued virtual googles.

The year is unknown to him. He has sat here for years and it shows through his tattered clothing, unruly hair, and pale ashy skin. The most noticeable feature of his worn fragile body is his eyes. These ocean blue eyes are glazed and stagnant, but what keeps me from thinking he’s dead is the soft blink that follows with every few seconds. His eyes carry the smallest amount of hope, but it disappears as soon as the lights flicker in the room from time to time. His breathing is slow but steady which secures me that he understands his place and has submitted to the rules.

I used the stylistic device of imagery to show the position of a guard who is watching a prisoner. In this case, I intended to make a paragraph where the reader could see the theme of reality control from a figure with authority. With imagery, I described the appearance of the prisoner and how his hopelessness comes off as a look of defeat to the guard who is narrating. The guard comes to the conclusion of a victory and this exemplifies how people become corrupt and power hungry.

Reality control is used by people of higher power to “brainwash” people of today's society. An example of reality control is the news articles posting and exporting false information to the public. In the dystopian society, the Government took away people's freedom of speech and took control of the environment. Eventually the environment is at its end and cannot be replenished. As in the movie the giver they are being raised in an euthopian society that they think it's perfect but in reality it’s their government being controlling every movement they do, but later on it turned out to be a dystopian society where. Everything surrounding them was a complete fraud.

I used imagery to show how the government has brainwashed and took control of society and its surroundings, by using the example of news articles or anything involving social media and also the giver.

Reality Control can be like fear and pressure upon our society. Having our social media’s monitored at all times. If you notice and take in consideration the fact that the government has eyes everywhere is kinda scary. For example, the internet knows what you want to see and based on what you like or view it shows you more of those kinds of photos or videos. They can also sensor certain things and take away your profiles. If you ever post an inappropriate image you can get banned from that certain social media or even get charges for breaking community guidelines.

If you really think about it almost everything could be considered b rain washing within societies. As across the world they may have similar ideals but different concepts of good. You could say murder is bad but then again its just conditioned within us to always believe that, but who truly told us from right from wrong, as in many recent tribes see it as right. You could say its a type of brain washing to condition that murder is wrong but who really said it was wrong? nothing is right or wrong truly its just our conditioning on what we believe.

The lights come on at 6 am sharp, waking me from my slumber. I pull the government issued blanket over my head and I try to get a few more precious minutes of sleep, but the Eyes are watching me. For as second, I feel like my blanket is transparent glass. The stare of the Eyes burn through me, and I can’t help but think about “before.” I thought about my life as a child, before The People’s Salvation took over. I remember my mother knitting our blankets, cooking our family recipes, looking through old pictures, creating scrapbook for the new pictures. Now, The Salvation doesn’t allow any expression of creativity, whether it be for practical purposes or not (such as a blanket to keep you warm). They are all about uniformity, claiming that there is no room for individuality. Anything unique or odd will perish, just as the prisoners who are brutally executed at the end of every month. Anything that is considered a threat will be threatened and eventually obliterated. The Salvation believes we humans are made to be sterile, free of thought and self determined purpose. We are given a purpose, by The Salvation, of course. It is impossible to be sterile; being a human is anything but that. But when you are controlled by robots, being a “human” is just a designation.

I used both metaphors and similes. Both convey the same message, but I will explain the metaphor in detail. By stating, “the stare of the Eyes burn through me,” I intend to depict what members of this society feel every single day. While reality control takes hold of what we perceive and to a certain extent how we perceive, our minds feel penetrated and helpless. We are forced to appear transparent, but that is not enough. My use of strong language display how intense and severe these effects are. It’s not a “gaze,” but an intense “stare. It’s not “see through,” but “burn through.” This is done for the reader to further understand how detrimental reality control is to society and its members.

When the world falls down and the long green and yellow trees grows; the creations that once scraped thee skies has fallen. Water finds its way and goes through anything that is faced. We all now see that the times are rough and think they will not find a way. They don’t cry nor ask. Only thing they can do is open their mind and try. Colors flow their mind in a wave of a smooth mindful monk. Colors they have never seen in their life. A soul they have never had before. A goal they will look fore more. The pleasure after the storm they found.

I use imagery, similes and metaphors. I used these stylistic devices to describe a world after a destructive storm that wiped out any thing that ever was. The image of the peoples life after. Idk

Reality control can be like brainwashing society on a daily basis. For example, everyday we go to school and pretend we understand what’s going on in class, when in reality we don’t. It’s like we up on a fake smile for 9 hours a day and when we go home we’ll get to relax and take the time to focus on ourselves because during school we aren’t able to take that time. We are pressured to know everything about a dystopian society and how to calculate the unit circle.

I used the metaphor “We put on a fake smile” to represent how we fake wanting to learn the lessons they teach. But in reality we don’t care and we are tired of the high expectations set up for us.

Reality control is when someone has power over you. In the past we saw how propaganda destroyed people's way of living. Time after time people are quickly being influenced by a hierarchy, and the citizens who are being manipulated are unaware of the true nature of society. In the future with technology growing stronger this causes the perfect way to control society even further than now.

I used imagery to describe this dystopian society. I picked this device because it is easier for people to have a better understanding of a controlled society.

It’s June 25, 3721. The other Hitchers and I continued our journey to Paradise. We haven’t been able to find an exit from Motherland. We’ve been trying to hide well and stay near the walls surrounding the city, but we’re starting to think the Lenses have caught sight of us. Since the familiar sound of the buzzing cameras have become louder by the day, we’ve decided to change our route. We have become worried about our path to the exit; we’re like a group of ants who were separated from their path by a fleshy, human finger, who is amused at the nervous bugs wandering aimlessly. As we planned our next move, the shadows lingered above us, taking peeks at our scribbled papers. Hopefully, we might be able to find the exit or a hint of it by the end of the week, we can’t keep this cylce of running away for much longer.

I provided details of the shadows and Lenses to create personification in the sentence. I also added a simile between the Hitchers and the ants.

I wanted to create a feeling of always being watched, even if you try your hardest to hide through the use of the shadows near the end.

I wanted to highlight them fact of always having someone watching you and limiting you.

I think society in the future will remain the same as it is today because of the corruption of the government is not going to be stopped, and the crimes that is happening is not going to decrease. Back in the early 1900s, during the Great Depression, the economy has crashed and the government still took the people’s houses. It was the government’s fault that the economy crashed because the government was telling us to invest in the stock market and yet the government took the people’s houses, and yet WE THE PEOPLE HAVE TO PAY FOR THE CONSEQUENCE FOR THE GOVERNMENT’S MISTAKES, that is just messed up in my opinion. The corruption still remains to this day, for instance, if a person murders another person, the murderer can still get away, like O.J SIMPSON. Another example would be from a YouTube video where a drug addict explains that he can't get a job because he smokes weed, but he also explains that a rapist can get a job. This is why this society will never change unless the government changes as well.
