Tone and Mood: The tone and mood of the text and the overall poster seems to be a somber like mood. As there lots of “shade” happening throughout the poster. The mood brings a sense of indignantly as there is some anger that is screaming at you. Furthermore, the anger is a correct kind of anger, because of the illegal and unconstitutional stops from police officer towards people of color. Nonetheless the tone and mood of this poster shows what should be done and it should be done now!

The content of the poster involves the headline, the photos, and the copy. The headline says, “The man on the left is more likely to be stopped by the police”. This tells us that people make assumptions based on looks, especially on skin color. The photos included are of Charles Manson and Martin Luther King. Manson is an infamous serial killer while King is known for being a civil rights leader, but since King is an African American, he is more likely to be pulled over unlike Manson. Lastly, the text underneath the photos give us statistics and information about people of color being more likely to be pulled over than Caucasians.

The purpose of the “Man on the Left” poster is to bring awareness to racial discrimination. The juxtaposition and parallelism of Martin Luther King Jr. and Charles Manson allows the poster to directly convey the purpose of racial bias amongst society. The poster implies that Martin Luther King Jr. “ is 75 times more likely to be stopped by the police while driving than” Charles Manson. This shows that the purpose of the poster is meant to target society and their racist ideologies and stereotypes of minorities. By targeting society the poster is able to achieve its goal of bringing attention to the existence of modern racial discrmination.

The author for this poster uses a variety of stylistic device to get his message across, namely, that racial profiling is an arachic and unjust practice. The most apparent stylistic device is the author’s use of logos. He includes statistics, like 80% of drivers stopped were black or Hispanic, to show that a problem does in fact exist. Then, he uses diction to make us indignant about it, because he directly calls the practice humiliating and illegal. A subtle, but no less potent, stylistic device is the use of juxtaposition. He contrasts Martin Luther King Jr with Charles Manson, highlighting the biggest fallacy of racial profiling, because the one being stopped was a noble peace prize winner and the other a mass serial killer.

In this educational poster named “THE MAN ON THE LEFT is 75 times to be stopped by the police while driving than THE MAN ON THE RIGHT” by American Civil Liberties Union, the author is communicating the problem of the racial profile happening in U.S society. The author in this poster is trying to state that a righteous man such as Martin Luther King who brings hope would go to jail instead of a man that creates chaos, based on their skin color.
